PIPH Services

At PIPH we offer many services for your family, with a goal to create healthy, well-balanced children. We are privileged to work with practitioners and doctors from many fields of expertise who have a special interest in your individual child and family. We also have more broad services to support your family with group nutrition, education, and exercise/movement programs.

Pediatric Care

Our integrative approach to pediatric health begins with more than 60 years of combined expertise in Western Pediatric care. We combine this with the knowledge of ancient medical traditions to develop an individualized care plan for each patient. Our doctors and other practitioners work side by side, which allows us to offer a more holistic and natural approach to your child’s care. We focus on the source or root cause of the disease rather than just treating the symptoms. Our goal is to guide you and your child to a lifetime of healthy habits, prevention, and healthy living which encourages our body’s innate healing.

We have decided to structure our visits differently from what is a standard 10 to 15-minute pediatric visit. That is why our new and well visits are up to one hour long, with acute visits scheduled for up to 30 minutes. We will also be offering frequent follow-up support via secure technology such as video visits, online portal, and text messaging. Through our membership model, we will have extended time to listen and get to know you, answer all your questions, and provide you with the education, knowledge, and skills to keep your family healthy and happy.

Well Child Care

The American Academy of Pediatrics has a standard set of visits for children as they are growing. These help parents and their health providers ensure that the children are physically, emotionally, and developmentally gaining their milestones from weight and language, to motor skills and social engagement. The visits are more frequent for children under age three and on a yearly basis thereafter. With our membership model, we will be able to do more in-depth evaluations if they are called for. We spend more time with families to discuss topics such as safety, healthy environment, parenting and anticipatory guidance to help you bring forth your child’s talents. Our goal is to guide you and your child to a lifetime of healthy habits and healthy living.

Infants and Toddlers

In the first year of life, we plan to see your baby seven or more times just for well-baby care. We have standard goals for weight and developmental milestones that we will check starting at birth and subsequently at months 1, 2, 4, 6, 9 and 12. The second year of life is a little more relaxed to 15, 18, and 24 months. The following year we will plan on visiting at the 30 and 36-month marks.

Preschool and Beyond

After 3 years old we will monitor a healthy child once yearly through high school graduation and possibly beyond. These are the basic visits for well childcare and any concerns or sick visits can be scheduled separately.

Prenatal Visits and Newborn Care

Prenatal Support

The months of pregnancy and immediate post-birth are special times for families and their babies. So much is going on internally when it seems so little is happening on the outside. We are privileged to have a very special certified program for moms and babies which you may want to further explore. This program is from the Maharishi Ayurvedic tradition, called Healthy, Happy Mother Baby

We welcome prenatal visits from families expecting their newborn in the near future. This is a special time with lots of questions, especially for first-time parents. You can come and meet our staff, visit and tour our facility, and make sure that we are a good fit for you. If nothing else, it helps you know how to navigate to our office before you have to worry about car seats and diapers. This is a time for you to ask questions of our providers and hear their knowledgeable answers and sense their decades of expertise.

Healthy Happy Mother Baby Program

The Healthy Happy Mother Baby Program provides a wonderful beginning for families based on the traditional time-tested knowledge of Ayurveda. Specialized consults are provided for families from preconception through pregnancy, labor & delivery and the postpartum period. The nourishing home care program following delivery facilitates the best start for the baby and supports recovery for mom.

This program works with your regular Obstetrical (OB) or Midwife care and chosen delivery method. You are welcome to start the program at any point, including only completing the postpartum consultation and treatments. You do not have to become members of our pediatric practice to benefit from this program.

The Program: During preconception, our dedicated team will work with you to develop an individualized diet and daily routine specifically designed to enhance fertility. We will set up a plan to help you remove impurities and environmental toxins from your tissues so your body is prepared to welcome a new baby.

While pregnant, we’ll work with you to develop a nutritious diet and self-care protocol that supports the development of the fetus. You will also learn how to avoid common household toxins. Doing so helps make the labor and delivery process as healthy and easy as possible.

The Healthy Happy Mother Baby Program increases the likelihood of a shorter duration of labor, less discomfort, and fewer complications. The postpartum care helps soothe and nourishes the mother with massages, and supportive treatments so that she may best nourish her newborn and her own recovery. We do this by encouraging rest, giving massages to mother and baby, and implementing a special diet and routine to restore balance to the mother’s body, mind, and emotions.

Call today to learn about how you can increase the chances that you deliver the healthiest and happiest baby possible. We take great pride in offering the best start to the babies and mothers entrusted in our care.

Newborn Care

Immediately after birth is a time that is precious but can also be challenging. The bodies of little babies are strong and yet delicate at the same time. We monitor newborn infants closely to assure their health.

There are many areas of common concern that we like to address thoroughly.  Mom’s bodies are suddenly challenged to produce enough food for her newborn. Sometimes an infant doesn’t gain enough weight, or their skin turns yellow indicating jaundice. Sometimes they have difficulty eating even if there is enough breast milk. Mom’s hormones are shifting quickly and can lead to tremendous emotional swings. Together we can provide you with the knowledge and support to feel reassured and secure in the care of your unique newborn. We will coach and cheer you on as you continue to succeed in raising your child!

Preteen and Teen Care

Adolescence can be an amazing experience as your child begins to develop into a grown adult, and it can be very challenging for all involved! Hormones in children start to shift as early as 8-10 years of age in girls, and 10-12 in boys. The PIPH team will help you navigate through these changes and remain in communication with your child. We offer a safe and welcoming place to discuss issues regarding sexuality and gender.

We understand the challenges of social media, screen time, bullying, and peer pressure. There are more mental health challenges today in otherwise healthy preteens and teenagers. Our team is here to address these issues with you and your teen. PIPH offers an expanded assortment of nonpharmacologic treatments that are our first line of therapy. We believe that there are many other ways to get a handle on stress, emotions, depression, and anxiety. From HeartMath to meditation, exercise to natural herbs, diet to daily routines we have tools to help you and your teen feel their best.

PIPH has expanded integrative treatment options for acne, obesity, birth control, improving athletic performance, treating sports injuries, pain and many other teenage issues. This is also a time when we like to start meeting alone with your child as we help them learn to care for their own health.

You are trying to be the most amazing parent and protect your child, but we know for some families that immunizations can be controversial. Our providers have seen firsthand the huge benefits and decreased illnesses accomplished through vaccinating our patients. We know that there are sometimes challenges for some parents to balance the benefits of giving vaccines versus the risk for reactions. For your children, we are offering some unique options that allow support of your child’s immune system before vaccination and provide detoxification afterward.

We believe that the AAP/ACIP schedule is safe for the huge majority of children, but more importantly for us is that we work together with you to provide appropriate care for your individual child. We will support you through your choices and make sure that your precious child has the best chance for a full and healthy life.

Expanded Laboratory Services

At PIPH we have standard laboratory tests at our office for your convenience. We offer both in-house labs including rapid testing for strep, anemia, urine, and other testing that is sent to an outside laboratory. In addition, with our Integrative Medicine focus, we specialize more on the root causes of illness and disease. To accomplish this, we may utilize expanded lab testing and services. Some testing may include environmental toxicities, food sensitivities, and genetics which may not be offered in your typical pediatric office.

  • Procedures – Circumcision, teen long-term contraception, ear piercing, suturing
  • Physicals, sports, school, camp
  • Same-Day Sick Appointments – colds, ear and throat infections, skin rashes

Manual Therapy

Manual therapy is a set of hands-on techniques used by our licensed practitioners to diagnose, treat, and prevent illness or injury. Through touch, our manual therapy providers move a patient’s muscles, soft tissues, and joints using various techniques that include stretching, gentle pressure and resistance.

When appropriate, manual therapy can replace the need for pain medications and complements traditional treatments.

Through manual therapy, providers apply a specific amount of pressure to different regions on the body. These techniques can help:

  •  Treat structural and tissue abnormalities
  • Relieve joint restriction and misalignment
  • Restore normal stomach and intestinal movement
  • Promote the overall movement of blood flow throughout the body
  • Reduce or relieve pain
  • Improve athletic performance
  • Reduce pregnancy back pain
  • Align the pelvis after delivery for faster postpartum recovery
  • Help alleviate birth trauma for Mom and Baby
  • Help correct infant skull shape (Cranial orthosis)

Massage therapy is also a form of manual therapy performed by licensed massage therapists. Our office will also be offering a variety of therapeutic massage packages.

Acupuncture/Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a noninvasive healing modality that facilitates the body’s natural ability to heal itself by restoring harmony and balance to the entire individual. It is based on balancing the flow of energy (chi) through the body. TCM has been providing children with healthcare solutions for over 2,000 years and is the second-largest medical system in the world currently used by over ¼ of the earth’s population.

Primary TCM methods of treating children include:

  • Dietary Therapy:  Healthy digestion is crucial to the health and well-being of infants and children.  Therefore, a proper diet is a very real means of preventing and treating the most commonly encountered children’s diseases.
  • Chinese Herbal Therapy:  Chinese herbs are prescribed in custom formulas using between four to fifteen herbs packaged as a liquid for easy administration to children.  Herbal formulations can be quite effective when treating or preventing illness, even when the patient has a history of chronic infections and antibiotic use.
  • Chinese Pediatric Massage:  Chinese massage (Tui Na) is useful for treating children down to 8 years of age.  It can be remarkably effective for treating such pediatric conditions as cough, constipation, chronic abdominal pain, dermatitis, and asthma.  It is gentle, safe, and without side effects.
  • Pediatric Acupuncture:  Pediatric Acupuncture (Sho-ni-shin) is a type of acupuncture specifically designed for the treatment of children. It often uses the stimulation of pressure points rather than needles.  It has been shown to be effective for the treatment of the following problems:
    • Pediatric Pain including Migraines and Tension-type Headaches
    • Abdominal Pain including Colic in infants
    • Neonatal Pain during or after exposure to painful procedures
    • Painful Periods in adolescent girls
    • Bedwetting
    • Assisting Autism Spectrum Disorder
    • Common Respiratory Problems including Asthma
    • Digestive Ailments

The word Ayurveda means “knowledge of life”.  Ayurveda is the oldest continuously used health care system on earth.  It is part of the Vedic tradition of knowledge that originated in India over 5000 years ago.  The focus of Ayurveda is on identifying the cause of the problem rather than just masking the symptom with a prescription.  The treatments are simple and natural and children enjoy following them because they bring relief in a gentle natural way.  Therapies involve bringing the system back into balance and often involve changing the diet or the daily routine.

Aromatherapy, music therapy, or stress reduction techniques like yoga and meditation may be used to bring the body back into alignment with its own natural rhythms. Herbal formulas may be recommended for a specific imbalance. Rather than creating side effects, these natural treatments boost immunity and actually create side benefits, or unexpected positive change in the overall mental, physical, and emotional health of your child.

Naturopathic medicine is a system that uses natural remedies to help the body heal itself. It embraces many therapies, including special diets, vitamins, herbs, massage, exercise and nutritional counseling to assist the natural healing processes.

Naturopathy was brought to the United States from Germany in the 1800s, but some of its treatments are centuries old. Today, it combines traditional treatments with modern science.

The goal of naturopathic medicine is to treat the whole child — that means mind, body, and spirit. It also aims to heal the root causes of illness — not just stop the symptoms.

Salt Therapy

As a safe and drug-free approach with no side effects, Salt Therapy or Halotherapy is a useful therapy for many respiratory symptoms and may lessen the need for prescription antihistamines, inhalers, and nasal sprays.  In fact, the New England Journal of Medicine published a study in 2006 that found salt inhalation is an effective complementary treatment for cystic fibrosis.  The noninvasive therapy is conducted in a room where dry salt is aerosolized for breathing and absorbed passively on the skin. The antibacterial, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties of salt have been documented to also help with many skin symptoms. It is a critical part of our evidence-based integrative program.

Salt Therapy May Help Relieve Symptoms of the Following Conditions:

  • Acne
  • Allergies (to pollen and pollutants)
  • Asthma
  • Bronchitis
  • Cold/Flu
  • Cough (particularly at night or after exercise)
  • Cystic Fibrosis
  • Dermatitis
  • Eczema/Psoriasis
  • Ear Infections
  • Pharyngitis/ Sore Throats
  • Respiratory Infections/Rhinitis
  • Sinus Infections
  • Tonsillitis
  • Wheezing

Our Salt Room

Infants and Children of all ages receive their spa-like treatment in a room designed for their comfort. The room is filled with age-appropriate toys and a table to keep them entertained during the 30-45-minute session.  Teens and adults relax on anti-gravity lounge chairs with a blanket and music during their 45-minute session.

In a hurry? We also have a salt booth for teens or adults, or infants with a parent that can provide the same treatment in about 10 minutes. Get a full salt therapy at lunch or before or after work with time to spare.

Salt therapy is safe for adults, children, babies and expectant mothers.  You do not have to be a member of our practice or need a referral from your physician to enjoy the many benefits of salt therapy.

If you or your child suffers from any of these symptoms, don’t hesitate to help alleviate them through salt therapy. Feel free to come by for a tour of our Center and Salt Room, or call us or book an appointment online today!

Sound Therapy is also used with children who have learning disabilities to help them normalize the ability to accurately perceive sensory information. Sessions may be done in group classes or individually and may include such therapies as chanting, singing bowls, or gongs.

Reiki is a Japanese energy healing practice where the therapist channels energy through the patient to activate the body’s natural healing processes.  This practice reduces stress, improves relaxation, increases physical and emotional well-being, supports overall balance, and promotes healing. This practice can be done with or without direct contact with the body of the individual adult or child receiving the therapy.

Dharma Parenting

Dharma Parenting is a unique approach to raising happy and successful children founded in the Ayurvedic tradition. The word “Dharma” comes from the Sanskrit verb dhri, which means to uphold or support.  Our dharma is our path in life- the lifestyle that supports our personal growth, happiness, success and fulfillment. Dharma Parenting was developed by Robert Wallace, PhD and Frederick Travis, PhD and incorporates six parenting tools that apply to children of all age groups.  They’re easy to remember using the word “dharma” as an acronym:

  • Discover your child’s and your own, brain/body type
  • Heal yourself
  • Attention and appreciation
  • Routines to improve family dynamics
  • Marriage meltdowns and cultivate better behavior
  • Anticipate and Adapt
  • Here at PIPH, Dr. Renee will offer individual support sessions and introductory group classes on how to use Dharma Parenting to assist your family in reaching happiness and balance.
